I think I'm going to start this post out with stating my job title at the hospital I work at. I am a unit-secretary IE doctors/nurses bitch. I am working this job to get an insight into the real world of medicine and I am certainly noticing some things I wish didn't exist. Lately, I'm noticing how much I despise surgeons. They all seem quite jaded with God-like complexes. I have had several bad encounters with surgeons so I feel I should share some here.
1. Todays encounter was not bad but there are some noteworthy points to share. There is a physician Dr. M who is highly religious and is always talking about God and medical mission trips. He is also on some fancy publications cover that explains just how righteous he really is. This isnt of any importance except to prove his hypocrisy and thats really for my own personal sick pleasure. Today I over hear him on the phone literally berating a nurse for a good 20 minutes screaming about Foley catheters. Then he finds me--keep in mind most people that have my job frankly suck, but I am actually VERY good. If i see a doctor come into my unit I will go fetch all of his/her charts without being asked and will place them neatly so they dont have to search for charts just round and go. I also make sure all labs are in the charts and if they are not current I will hunt down a lab tech to ensure they are before a doctor looks at the chart. I always check orders to make sure they are 100% up to date and if there is a stat order I follow up to ensure it was done in a timely order. OK enough of that lets just say I'm good. So he begins yelling about not being able to find a chart. After checking that pod I explain to him I will go find the chart in another pod and bring it to him. Here is the conversation that ensues
MD: " Where the hell is the chart for 452, I fucking don't have time for this bullshit."
PreMed: " Sir, I will look for the chart in the other pods and bring it to you."
MD: "Why the fuck would it be in another pod when the patient is two feet away"
--- Isn't that always the question. I don't know I like to play a little game of hide the chart to see just how badly I can piss you people off. HELLO several health professionals deal with that chart on a daily basis and they often take it to the most obscure places. I'm offering to let you sit on your butt while I find it---
PreMed: (begins to smile as she notices the charts location) " Sir the chart is actually right there under neath your other chart"
MD: "oh." (picks up blackberry and continues to ignore pre-med)
I would also like to point out I once had a chart thrown at me.
However, all of this aside I have become genuine friends with a lot of doctors at the hospital and more often than not we have very pleasant repor where I am not getting degraded.
